NBCE Part I Test Day: What to Bring and Expect

NBCE Part I Test-Day Guide: What to Bring, What to Expect and How to Stay Calm

You've put in the weeks of studying. The last thing you want is for something avoidable, like an expired ID or a late arrival, to cost you the exam.

The NBCE's test-day rules are strict: show up late and you won't be admitted, and your exam fee is forfeited. Bring an expired ID and the same thing happens.

This guide walks you through test week step by step, so the only thing you have to think about on exam day is the exam itself.

Your Test-Week Timeline

Part I test week at a glance

One week out

  • Take your last full-length practice exam at least five days before the real one. After that, review only your miss log and high-yield summaries.
  • Check the expiration date on your ID. The NBCE requires a valid, government-issued photo ID. Expired IDs and digital IDs aren't accepted, and you won't be able to test.
  • Confirm your test site, appointment time and route. If it's somewhere new, do a practice drive.
  • Feeling sick? The NBCE asks examinees not to attend with symptoms of a contagious illness and to contact them about a future testing opportunity. Reach out as early as you can, since changes within 17 days of your appointment aren't refunded.

The night before

  • Stop studying by early evening. Cramming now adds anxiety, not points.
  • Set out everything you're bringing: your ID, one car key and a clear plastic water bottle with a lid.
  • Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Sleep helps you remember what you've studied.

What to Bring (and What to Leave in the Car)

The NBCE's list of allowed items is short. Everything else stays at home or in your vehicle.

Bring

Leave behind

A valid, government-issued photo ID (not expired, not digital)

Your phone and any device that connects to the internet

One car key (the NBCE provides a place to store it)

Smartwatches, fitness trackers and other electronics

One water bottle in a clear plastic container with a lid

Notes, books and study materials

A wedding band, if you wear one

All other jewelry, bags, hats and jackets

The NBCE provides a blank sheet of paper and a pencil for the exam.

Expect security screening. Check-in can include emptying your pockets, pushing your sleeves up to your elbows, raising your pant legs to your knees and a metal-detector wand. Jackets and hats have to come off, and you'll be screened again when you come back from your break. Wear comfortable clothes without a lot of metal, and give yourself extra time.

Read the full rules on the NBCE test-day page before you go, since they can change.

During the Exam

How the appointment runs

Your appointment is 4 hours: a tutorial, Session 1 (General Anatomy, Spinal Anatomy and Physiology), an optional 15-minute break, Session 2 (Chemistry, Pathology and Microbiology), and a short survey at the end. Actual testing time is 3 hours and 26 minutes for 255 questions.

Pacing

That works out to about 48 seconds per question. A simple rule: if you can't narrow it down within a minute, pick your best answer, flag it if you can, and move on. One hard question isn't worth three easy ones you run out of time for.

Use your break

Take the 15-minute break, even if you feel fine. Session 2 is where fatigue hits, and Microbiology comes last. Stand up, drink water, stretch your neck and shoulders, and take a few slow breaths. Don't replay Session 1 questions in your head. They're done.

Keep in mind that you'll go through security again when you return, and phones and notes are off-limits during breaks too.

When anxiety spikes

  • Expect hard questions. Everyone gets questions they don't know. It's not a sign you're failing.
  • Reset with your breath: breathe in for four counts, out for six, two or three times.
  • Focus on the question in front of you, not your running score.

After the Exam

Rest first. You just finished a four-hour mental marathon. Do something that has nothing to do with chiropractic.

Don't share or discuss exam questions. This one matters more than most students realize. Under the NBCE Examinee Agreement, you agree not to discuss, post or reconstruct exam content, including describing questions or listing the topics you saw, whether in person, in group chats or on social media. Violations can lead to cancelled scores or being barred from testing. Talking about how the day felt is fine; talking about what was on it isn't.

Wait for your score. Scores aren't given the same day. They're posted to your MyNBCE account, and the NBCE publishes score release dates for each administration.

If it doesn't go your way, you're not starting over. Our guide on what to do if you failed NBCE Part I walks you through the retake rules and an 8-week plan.

Test-Day FAQs

What ID do I need for NBCE Part I? One valid, government-issued photo ID. Expired IDs and digital IDs aren't accepted.

What happens if I'm late to the NBCE exam? You won't be admitted. Your exam fee is forfeited, and you'll need to reapply for another date.

Can I bring water or snacks? You can bring one water bottle in a clear plastic container with a lid. Food isn't on the NBCE's list of allowed items, so eat beforehand.

Is there a break during Part I? Yes. There's an optional 15-minute break between Session 1 and Session 2. You'll go through security screening again when you return.

Do I get scratch paper? Yes. The NBCE provides a blank sheet of paper and a pencil.

Can I talk about the exam afterward? You can talk about your experience, but not the content. The NBCE Examinee Agreement prohibits sharing or discussing exam questions or topics.

Walk In Knowing What to Expect

The calmest students on test day are the ones who've already done it, many times, in practice. When the format, timing and question style feel familiar, there's nothing left to be nervous about except the content.

The Chiro AlignEd Learning Part I Review Course builds that familiarity:

  • Content organized around how the NBCE tests, so questions look the way you expect
  • Full-length practice exams to rehearse your pacing and break routine before the real thing
  • Searchable videos for quick final-week review of any topic
  • Access Until You Pass™ Guarantee: meet our Exam Readiness Standards and if you don't pass, we renew your 90 days of access at no cost

"What stood out most was how familiar the exam felt." — Hillary W., Part I Review student
